Environmental Policy

Historically, the UK has depended on landfill as the most convenient and least expensive method of disposal for household and commercial wastes. There is growing concern regarding the environmental implications of landfilling wastes but when properly planned and managed, landfilling can be undertaken without impact on the environment.

Concern about the possible environmental problems associated with waste handling and disposal has led to renewed interest in waste reduction, reuse, recycling and waste treatment. The trend towards a more integrated approach to waste management has been further fuelled by rising prices of energy and certain raw materials, coupled with a prospective shortage of landfill capacity and substantially higher disposal costs. Devon Waste Management intends to be at the forefront in developing and providing integrated and innovative solutions for the management of wastes.

Policy on Landfill Tax Credits Scheme

The Landfill Tax Credit Scheme (LTCS) was designed to help mitigate the effects of landfill and its associated activities upon local communities and was introduced with the imposition of the landfill tax in 1996. It encourages partnerships between landfill operators, their local communities and the voluntary and public sectors. In common with most landfill site operators, Devon Waste Management Ltd is entitled to donate up to 6.0 per cent of its landfill tax liability to environmental projects in return for a 90 per cent tax credit. Supportable projects can include environmental improvement schemes or community amenity enhancement developments within 10 miles of a Devon Waste Management Ltd facility.
