Landfill Restoration
Landfill sites are progressively restored when final levels are reached in various parts of the site. The restoration includes an engineered cap one metre thick to minimise the ingress of rainwater and to seal in the products of the waste decomposition so that they can be extracted and dealt with in a controlled manner. For instance, landfill gas is prevented from venting to atmosphere by the cap and is captured by a vacuum extraction system from where it is used to power an electricity generator which is sold to the national grid.
A soil restoration layer is then placed above the cap and landscaped as required by the planing consent. Examples of restoration at Deep Moor are shown on this page.
