Waste Recycling Sign

Devon Waste Management's principle role is in the management and operation of a number of public recycling centres and the composting of garden and organic waste supplied by the public at the Recycling Centres and District Councils from their separate collection schemes.

Machines Working on Landfill Site

The company operates 23 Recycling Centres throughout Devon (www.recycledevon.org) on behalf of Devon County Council at which members of the public can deliver their recyclable and residual waste. Each site is operated by a specialist recycling sub-contractor who removes anything of value which can be recovered or re-used and diverts the residues into containers for removal to landfill. Recovered materials include white goods, metals, bric-a-brac, cardboard, waste wood, plastic bottles, glass, paper, textiles, oils, hazardous household chemicals & paints together with garden waste which is taken to a centralised composting facility for use in agriculture, landscaping and for sale at Garden Centres under the name Westcountry Compost. In 2004/5 the recovery rate at these sites averaged 60% and made a huge contribution to the Devon recycling target.

Garden & Green Waste Composting

Garden waste delivered by the public to Recycling Centres is transported in containers to 5 centralised composting/shredding sites where it is shredded and either composted on that site or delivered to numerous farms where it undergoes a regulated aerobic composting process in windrows. The benefit of the latter is that it is introduced straight into an agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Some off the District Council waste collection services also collect garden waste (and some also include cardboard) which is also dealt with in a similar manner. All the sites are run in accordance with strict licence or exemption requirements issued by the Environment Agency.

Commercial Waste Recycling

Coastal Waste is the commercial skip and container hire arm of Devon Waste Management and undertakes recycling of the majority of skip waste it collects from all its customers. Each collected skip is sorted at the depot to recover wood, metals, cardboard, and rubble/hardcore. The residues, which can be as little as 30% of the original skip weight are then transported to landfill For more information please follow the link to Coastal Waste.

Environmental Monitoring

DWML's operational landfill site at Torrington has a comprehensive landfill gas extraction system which converts the gas into electricity which is exported to the national grid. The power produced, around 1 MW is enough to supply around 1,500 houses, about the size of nearby Torrington.

Composting

DWML has been at the forefront of garden waste composting in Devon since 1992. Starting from fairly small beginnings, the company now arranges for over 32,000 tonnes per year of garden waste to be composted and utilised principally in agriculture applications. This accounts for around a third of the overall recycling percentage which is achieved on behalf of Devon which is currently 32.7% during 2004/5.

Man collecting waste

The majority of garden waste is delivered by the public to the various Recycling Centres situated throughout Devon. DWML also undertakes the composting of separately collected garden waste and cardboard undertaken by some of the District Council's in Devon and also receives commercially delivered green waste from gardening and landscape contractors.

The green waste is composted at various sites around Devon and is then screened to produce a soil improver, mulch for sale under the name Westcountry Compost or is shipped straight to farms for use in agriculture.

DWML is currently planning an Animal By-Products compliant, in-vessel tunnel composting facility at its Deep Moor landfill to support kerbside collections of organic waste from District Councils in North Devon and for green waste segregated at household waste recycling centres.
